Turkey Sloppy Joe's

Y'all...I never liked Manwich, it tasted like meat covered in sugar. And I am all for sweets but not like that!!

But this recipe, it is my go to and approved by my little family. I found it many years ago on MyRecipes.com but I have modified it to fit our needs and likes! a.k.a less onion, more green pepper and definitely not ground round! Yikes.

Also, I double this recipe! Always. It freezes great for future meals!

What you need (makes about 5 servings, 3/4 c each):
1/2 c chopped onion
3/4 c chopped green bell pepper
1 lb ground turkey
2 cups no-salt-added tomato sauce
2 tbsp tomato paste
1 tbsp prepared mustard
1 tsp chili powder
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp dried oregano
1/8 tsp black pepper
2-3 (1 1/2-ounce) whole grain or multigrain rolls, split

Preparation:

  1. Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. A
  2. Add first 3 ingredients; cook until turkey is no longer pink, stirring to crumble.
  3. Stir in tomato sauce and the next 8 ingredients (tomato sauce through black pepper).
  4. Reduce heat to medium-low.
  5. Cover and cook 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Add a slice of cheddar cheese (optional).
  7. Spoon 3/4 cup turkey mixture over HALF of each bun. Trust me, you don't need the full roll...I get mine from a local bakery called Companion, they are multi-grain and amazing.
